We’ve been working with Northumbria Police’s Violence Reduction Unit to support some of the most vulnerable young people in our local area.
The purpose of the VRU is to improve lives to prevent crime, and one of the key ways to do that is early intervention. By using Barefoot Professionals who have lived experience of the issues these young people face, we’re able to better ensure that we engage those we want to support and to build relationships based on mutual respect and trust. We can then help them understand and acknowledge the underlying causes of antisocial behaviour and violent crime and work more effectively through early intervention and prevention to encourage positive behaviours and stop the destruction of people’s lives.
Our amazing team of Barefoot Professionals work in an agile, creative and intense way to support the young people and their families, developing strategies to keep the whole family unit safe, secure and well. We provide diversionary routes out of any negative and violent behaviour that a young person may already be trapped in, preventing the progression of crime and violence whilst improving lives.
Our Strategic Director, Pauline, was interviewed by the VRU about Family Gateway’s work building resilience in the family household and the importance of using staff with lived experiences: https://fb.watch/5kLPtAmrrD/ and https://fb.watch/5kLR0ZHTzX/.
Your donations help us continue supporting families just like this. If you can’t contribute financially, please spread the word about our work and share our stories – there’s more than one way to support your community! We’re so grateful for all the help we receive; thank you.
